AFSC National Youth and Militarism Program Update

October 15, 2001  4:57p.m.

Dear Friend:

In the wake of the tragedies of September 11th, many people have voiced their concerns to us about military issues, especially about draft and conscription, conscientious objection and voicing opposition to military response. We have several different kinds of resources available:

WEB
The "Making Choices" section of our website can help you sort out your feelings about the military and find out about alternatives, even if you are already in the military.

For information about the draft and selective service, see this page:
http://www.afsc.org/youthmil/choices/draft.htm

From our "Resources" page, you can download or order free sample copies of resources and also download an order form for bulk copies of print materials and multimedia items.

To learn how you can get involved, see our "Activism" section. It contains listings for Events, Internships, Scholarships and Fellowships, Upcoming Events, Organizations and Coalitions, and information about Funding, Local Campaigns and Students' Rights.

Each month, we publish "Y&M: A Monthly Magazine About War, Youth, and Peace". It contains news and analysis about militarism and youth. Past issues may also be viewed online.

PRINT
We have a "Draft Registration and Conscientious Objection Information Packet" available for $2.50. It contains fact sheets and other readings on selective service issues, conscientious objection and financial aid.

The Youth & Militarism Program produced a video documentary called "Blood Makes the Grass Grow: Conscientious Objection and the Gulf War" about six young people who were US soldiers during the Gulf War and how they attempted
to become conscietious objectors. $25.

"Draft Registration - Steps Quaker Youth Can Take" explains the draft and the choices that young people have as well as where to get more information. Appropriate for non-Quakers, too.
