ANTI-SLAVERY: Urgent Action Alert

"ENDURING FREEDOM" For All

Hello,

This is a special telephone action campaign alert. Please take a minute to speak up for those silenced in slavery.

BACKGROUND:
As part of its war on terrorism, the US has suddenly made diplomatic overtures toward Sudan - a country that once harbored Osama bin Laden and continues to wage a genocide on its southern population. At the request of the White House, Congress recently shelved pending economic measures against Sudan. And the US helped lift UN sanctions against Sudan.

Even as the Administration presses the Sudanese regime to arrest terrorists, Sudanese forces continue to terrorize civilians. Sudanese planes bombed two southern villages this week, killing 15 children. On October 4, Sudan's Vice-President addressed militia fighters, saying: "The jihad is our way, and we will not abandon it."

Sudan's actions this month plainly reveal that US attempts to engage are seen as a signal that regime can continue to terrorize its own black African population with impunity. Our silence and inaction allow terrorist forces to thrive, and betray the principle of freedom we seek to uphold.

ACTION:
Don't let the US abandon those enslaved in a short-sighted and self-defeating attempt to stop terrorism. We are targeting four US leaders with the message that the slaves in Sudan cannot be forsaken. Take a minute to call:

President Bush at the White House: 202-456-1111

Colin Powell at the State Department: 202-647-5291

Senate Foreign Relations Chair Joe Biden:
302-573-6345(Delaware office)

House Foreign Relations Chair Henry Hyde:
630-832-5950 (Illinois office)

TALKING POINTS:
-I understand the need for a broad coalition to support the US campaign against global terror. But we should not be allying with Sudan, a terror regime in its own right. I object to the White House's demand to stop the Sudan Peace Act, which would have blocked Americans from funding oil companies fueling slave raids and genocide in Sudan.

-Our new partnership with Sudan has already led to more bloodshed and terror. This week, the Sudanese air force targeted black African villages in southern Sudan, and killed 15 children in two bombing attacks. Sudan's Vice-President publicly urged government troops - who loot villages and enslave children - to continue their "jihad."

-The US campaign is called "Enduring Freedom". But we have instead sent the signal that we are prepared to abandon Sudan's black African tribes, who have been on the frontlines of terror for years. Sudanese children held in slavery are now "enduring bondage" while we look away.

-Please tell the President that he cannot betray the people of southern Sudan, so many of whom have been abducted into slavery. He must stand with them, and insist that the Sudanese government end its genocidal campaign immediately.

Here are the numbers again. Take a minute to make each call.
