THE MARCH FOR CHILDREN'S RIGHTS

On 8 May 2002, several hundred children and adults participated in a
'March for Children's Rights' in New York City. Ending with a rally and
candlelight vigil near United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ), the march
supported the global fight against exploitative child labour and called
for world leaders attending the UN Special Session on Children (that opened that day at UNHQ) to keep the promises made at the 1990 World Summit for Children. Participants also called on the US Government to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The gathering was sponsored by the international NGO Global March Against Child Labour, the US-based Kids Meeting Kids youth organization and other child rights groups. Speakers included International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Juan Somavia, government and human rights representatives and children from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.
